Testimonials

Luis-bodyshot - Copy

“Some of the most important aspects of creative endeavour are seldom taught in our education systems. Aspects such as conceptual clarity, organizational strategies, developing a creative ‘voice’, or identifying creative blocks were all concerns that impeded me from making progress. Dinuk has been a fantastic resource for my professional development, guiding me to discover patterns within my process by analyzing my work with scrutiny from an objective vantage point. He is a knowledgeable mentor and his advice has proven to be an invaluable source of confidence and motivation in my creative pursuits.”

“For me, the biggest challenge is just to begin the work. Perfectionism mixed with a lack of outer accountability make it a real challenge to get motivated each day, even most of the way through a writing project, when the concept is clear and the momentum should be carrying me. Dinuk helped me clarify the issues that hold me back, and came up with a plan I can use every day to acknowledge them, adjust my perspective, and return to the joy of creating. He is passionate about finding out what makes a creator tick, and removing the rust on the inner workings that prevent forward movement. It was a pleasure to connect with someone who understands that the process of expressing an idea can be as important as the idea itself”

“Dinuk is a healer. Dinuk holds space. Dinuk understands artists because he is one. He is kind, generous, and open minded. He understands the creative process and the workings of a creator’s mind, and this expertise is exactly what I needed when we met. Rather than just telling me what I needed to do, he asked me questions which I were able to ponder and grapple with after our session, and which started to assist in the process of unblocking my creative flow rather quickly. Dinuk is a wonderful mentor who understands all aspects of creative pursuits, including performance and writing. This is the kind of mentorship and support which most artists need at various times in their creative lives. I recommend working with him 100%.”

“Combining a diverse artistic portfolio with a genuine passion for creative discourse, Dinuk has the ability to explore the work of others in a uniquely impactful way. His methodical approach to mentorship has helped me to precisely identify and articulate creative obstacles within my own work and, with his guidance, I have been able to develop a greater sense of conceptual clarity and personal direction. Highly regarded for his bold and imaginative artistry, Dinuk’s capacity to connect with others is nothing short of brilliant. Without hesitation, I strongly recommend his consultancy to anyone seeking a greater depth of clarity within their own creative practices.”

“One of the challenges I encounter is lack of methodology when going from inspiration to concept and then to execution. Very often, my ideas get lost and buried in the process of developing them. Dinuk has been excellent in offering effective tools and techniques that help me stay focused during the creative process. His guidance is invaluable and practical yet, at the same time, encourages openness and authenticity. And to get an insight of how he works as an artist is truly inspirational.”

“Dinuk is a highly attentive, inquisitive, and caring person. His approach to harnessing creativity is anything but haphazard, and he’s developed an exciting, yet dependable structure that allows you to realize your goals. While his expertise and experience are obvious, it is his ability to ‘leave no stone unturned’ that allows for a clarity of purpose that is often elusive in any creative field. He helped me parse through the fog of uncertainty and ambiguity, and provided an illuminating perspective through each of my artistic footsteps.”

About Dinuk

20100517_DinukWijeratne_02

Described by the New York Times as ‘exuberantly creative’, the JUNO and multi-award-winning composer/performer Dinuk Wijeratne is busy with a list of commissions and projects that extend four years into the future.

Dinuk’s music has been performed at such venues as Carnegie Hall and the Philharmonie Berlin, by virtually every Canadian Orchestra, and by Grammy winners – one of whom described his Tabla Concerto as “simply the best Western Classical piece written for my instrument”.

Dinuk was a main character alongside Benjamin Zander, Eric Whitacre, and Bobby McFerrin in What Would Beethoven Do?, the 2016 documentary feature about innovation in Classical music. A passionate educator, Dinuk has guest-lectured at universities across Canada, is co-founder of the Bach Tree program in New Hampshire for creative and collaborative musicians, founding faculty at the Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance, and a consultant for the Banff Centre‘s ‘Evolution Classical’ program.

Dinuk is a graduate of the Juilliard School, The Royal Northern College of Music, and Mannes College, and holds a doctorate from the University of Toronto.

Throughout his journey as an artist and musician, Dinuk has studied creative processes across disciplines with utter fascination, and has incorporated their influences into his own work. His approach to coaching, as well as his own music, is based on the notion that creativity – far from being the purely nebulous activity it is portrayed in popular culture – in fact involves a great deal of technique, strategy, and psychology. And all of these things can be acquired. His greatest reward in the collaborative process is the knowledge that someone he helps is able to surpass themselves in some way.

after it for good reason.'

'Remarkable piano artistry....he has an enviable touch'

the California Chronicle

'Wijeratne’s extraordinary setting was the last of three concerts featuring
works commemorating Bishop. Not only interesting but apocalyptic - an
exciting whirlpool of energy and tranquility, marking the impact of Portuguese
steel on Brazilian rainforest and aboriginal humanity, and rising in its latter
stages to an apotheosis of movement and drums. The music was a brutal
exposition of colonialism at its nastiest, yet colourful, exotic, vividly original,
and sent over the top by the last section.'

the CHRONICLE HERALD on 'Brazil, January 1, 1502'

'Dinuk embodies the true meaning of an artist. His creative
approach to composition brings a fresh virtuosity to an age old
art form. Invisible Cities is a milestone in the genre.'

Dinuk is an artist who appears to be constantly

Sri Lanka Sunday Times

'[Love Triangle] is the kind of direction I like to see composers who are writing for chamber music go in.
What [Dinuk] is able to do so expertly is articulate a mix of sounds, and a mix of worlds.'

Roman Borys, the GRYPHON TRIO

'[The] East-meets-West work bristles with the energy of a coiled spring,
fuelled by a near-impossible melting pot of Indian tabla-like dance rhythms,
funky jazz riffs, tonal clusters and extended instrumental techniques. It left
the impression one had just journeyed into the heart of a strange new world
of breathtaking beauty and joyous energy, and it earned a rousing standing
ovation by the bewitched crowd.'

the WINNIPEG FREE PRESS on 'Gajaga Vannama'

'One of the most exciting compositional voices in this country right now.'

the CBC (2023)

'The Tabla Concerto [is] an east-west fusion at once beguiling, deeply serious and joyous.
Wijeratne creates an entirely original soundscape.'
